¡Viva México!
Last Saturday, September 15, we celebrated "Él Grito de Dolores" before Mexican Independence Day! At the Mexican Civic Center in Downtown, Salt Lake City, there were food trucks, some cultural dances, a few tables on family history and different classes at the Civic Center and, of course, the "grito".
This is a tradition that repeats every year the night before Mexican Independence Day on September 16th. A color guard presents the flag, and someone (usually the President of México, but in our case it was someone sent from the Mexican Consulate) stands and leads the people in "Él Grito de Dolores", which goes like this:
¡Vivan los héroes que nos dieron patria!
¡Viva Hidalgo!
¡Viva Morelos!
¡Viva Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez!
¡Viva Allende!
¡Viva la Independencia Nacional!
¡Viva México! ¡Viva México! ¡Viva México!
Which, translated to English, reads:
Mexicans!
Long live the heroes who gave us our homeland!
Long live Hidalgo!
Long live Morelos!
Long live Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez!
Long live Allende!
Long live Aldama and Matamoros!
Long live the nation's independence!
Long Live Mexico! Long Live Mexico! Long Live Mexico!
The names listed are important figures in the Independence movement, and after the first line, everyone present shouts "¡Viva!". All in all it's a pretty moving experience, even for a gringo like me. Here's the video of the one we went to this year:
We had some great food and got to celebrate México, so it was a good day.
